Pleasantville the use of colour Essay Example for Free
Pleasantville the use of colour Essay Discuss why the film makers decided to use both black and white and colour in Pleasantvilleà Pleasantville was released in September 1998 but is set mostly in a 1950s sitcom after the main characters are sent into a televison because the two main characters, David and Jennifer broke their television remote; disabling their television. Gary Ross uses colour to make the viewer think about important events in history, to put across some important messages and also, using colour small referances are made throughout the film to historical events. His main messages are about communism and the mcarthy era in the 1940s to 50s, the black rights movement and a sense of an idealistic reality. This is all shown by the gradual changing of the colour of objects and people in Pleasantville. The Mcarthy era was a time during the cold war from the late 1940s to the late 1950s where America was afraid of communism. It was named to critisize the actions and followers or Senitor Mcarthy who lead many political witch hunts, however the mcarthy period extended back before Senetor Mcarthy had a part in it and the term is used to generalise this period in time. In these political hunts, anyone could be acused of being a communist, especially government members and people in the entertainment industry (like Gary Ross father who was also a director). These people could have everything taken away from them, and many jobs were lost in America due to these witch hunts, the people in question would be thrown infront of a jury and be forced to confess other communists and how the person in question had broken the law. This is shown when Bud (the main character played by Toby Maguire) and Mr.Jonson (the local shop owner) is taken and has been put on trial, without a lawyer and a chance to defend themselves. They are taken because they were coloured and did not conform with Code of Public Conduct which was established when the black and white inhabitants of Pleasantville are scared of change and being in colour, much like the people in the Mcarthy era. The people of the Mcarthy era were scared of change, they saw change and wanting freedom a way of rebelling and wanting to overthrow the left wing, democratic government. This is very hypocritical as America portrayed itself to be The leader of the free world. Many things were done to stop this, for example when the black and white people of Pleasantville smashed the coloured stain glass window with a bench. The use of colour in this case is shown to divide the two groups of people: the new generation of people, open to change and not scared of the future (the coloured people) and the older fashioned generation, set in their ways and afraid of change (the black and white people). The other major historical event pictured is the major African-American civil rights movement in the late 1950s. This is depicted by coloured people (signfying the African American people) being segregated from the black and white people (signifying the white), this is evident in the courtroom scene colour divided scenes, very much like the relationship between white supremists and the black population of America at that time.

Bill Gates :: Biography Technology Computers Essays
Bill Gates Bill Gates is the Antichrist Ever since Microsoft was founded, Bill Gates has gained power over the people of the world by winning a monopoly in the computer-software industry. From the assistance Microsoft gave in the development of the personal computer, to the virtual monopoly that Windows 95 now has on most computers all over the world; Microsoft has controlled a major portion of the computer industry. In his repeated conquests over his competitors, Gates has left an increasingly obvious amount of evidence that proves that he is the fourth and final antichrist. Most of this evidence comes from Gates' computer products and is referred to in Revelations. This evidence may have been left on purpose, or was a careless mistake by the founder of Microsoft. Like the other men who have been considered antichrists, Gates has attempted to rule the world. The only difference between Gates and his predecessors is that he is trying to rule the world through computers, not through military for ce. ASCII(American Standard Code for Information Interchange) code is a system of keeping track of letters, numbers and characters on a computer. When Bill Gates and IBM decided to use ASCII code in the IBM Personal Computer, many people didn't know what computers were, or care what ASCII code was. Many people who did know what ASCII code was didn't think that Bill Gates was evil. Today, now that more people use computers regularly, Bill Gates' evil secrets have been revealed to the public through the Internet and anti-Microsoft activists. "Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man : His number is 666." (Revelation 13:18) Bill Gates' full name is William Henry Gates III. If the ASCII codes of the letters in "BILLGATES" are added, plus three for the "III" in his name, then the sum is 666 (antichrist.txt). B I L L G A T E S 3 66 73 76 76 71 65 84 69 83 3 = 666 "Let him who has understanding calculate the number of th e beast" refers to computer programmers and others who have knowledge in computers. Gates most likely did not expect for the people in his industry to divulge his secret identity to the public, but an increasing number of computer users have found and advertised the truth about him.

Culture and Politics in Fascist Italy Essay
In The Patron State: Culture and Politics in Fascist Italy, Maria Susan Stone discusses the cultural policy-making under Mussoliniââ¬â¢s regime in Italy from 1922 to 1943. Specifically, she has provided a detailed study of two of the most popular showpieces of public culture during the fascist regime: the reconstituted Venice Biennale and the 1932 Exhibition of the Fascist Revolution. Stone asserts that the cultural politics that happened during the fascist regime in Italy was developed in three stages. The first stage (from 1925-30) was when the Fascists worked with the established institutions of high culture. It was during this stage that the regime discovered that it could not officially sanction any one style or movement. Stone also described this stage as the time when the Fascists dealt with the social elites. The second stage (from 1931-36) was the period when they used patronage and experimentation in an effort to shape cultural institutions according to their specifications. This is also the period when the Fascists increasingly gained support from the mass. They achieved this by moving away from supporting traditional events aimed for social elites and supporting events aimed at the masses instead. And finally, the third stage (from 1937-43), was when they adopted a more coercive set of methods. Through flexible policy of taste and patronage, the Fascists were able to win the consent of artists and draw supporters from the higher class to the masses. The role and use of mass culture during the Fascist regime have always fascinated historians for the past thirty years. Stone had added to the vast researches by other prominent historians such as Walter Adamson, Philip Cannistraro, and Umberto Silva on the same topic but on a new perspective. Why Is Art Important - 1165 Words
Why is art important? What role does art play in our society? What value is placed upon artists and their art, and why? Depending on itââ¬â¢s purpose art can be important in a vast number of ways. Whether it was made to convey emotion, be for political cause, or just be aesthetically pleasing. It connects people to one another. The artist and the viewer share a connection, the artist expresses themselves through a work of art, and the viewer acknowledges it and is affected by it. I suppose for different people art varies in the role it plays. Art comes in different shapes and sizes and while not everyone is an art enthusiast who is knowledgeable about most artist and movements, most people do have some form of art in their households. One thing that makes it fascinating is that It does not require former knowledge to admire art. Even mundane things such as television, magazines, and the buildings down the street are considered art. What makes something a work of art? Is art defined by particular boundaries? If so, what are they and how have they changed over the course of history? Art is much more than just a painting on a canvas and in fact it is not just limited to that style of expression. A broad way to describe it, is that art is a visual product of an individualââ¬â¢s creative mind. Educational Achievement Of Students With Disabilities
Now, as far as how all students fair academically, it can vary based on school rules and acceptance of it, the teacher, how the class operates, the amount of disabled verses nondisabled students, and so many other things. If inclusion is accepted and done right, there will be ââ¬Å"no significant differences in the academic performanceâ⬠¦ of students without disabilities enrolled in inclusive classes and those who [are] notâ⬠(Disher, Mathot-Buckner, McDonnell, Mendel, and Thorson 224). ââ¬Å"The presence of students with developmental disabilities in general education classes [does] not negatively impact the educational achievement of students without disabilitiesâ⬠(235). In fact, in some studies, some of the lower and average level general education students improved when placed in inclusive settings (Fiorello, Huber, and Rosenfeld 500). The use of tactics, like manipulatives and certain technological activities, geared towards special education students in the general education classroom, can inadvertently improve some of the other students understanding and test scores. Some people argue that placing special education students with advanced students creates too big of a gap moving the range of tolerance downward to the point that the needs of the high achievers are not being met (Fiorello, Huber, and Rosenfeld 498).
